What JPS Is the Same as PJ Original? Australian Cigarette Brand Changes, Winfield New Names & Strengths Guide

1. What JPS Is Same as PJ Original (Peter Jackson) in Australia?

One of the most common questions among Australian adult smokers is “what JPS is same as PJ Original?” Historically, Peter Jackson (PJ) used a unique colour hierarchy in Australia where PJ Original Blue was the full-strength cigarette (12mg/10mg class) and PJ Virginia Red / Gold sat in the medium-to-smooth bracket. When Imperial Brands consolidated Peter Jackson into the global JPS (John Player Special) portfolio, the colour labels shifted to standard international conventions:

• PJ Original (Peter Jackson Original Blue — Full Strength) → JPS Classic Original (JPS Red): Delivers the exact same rich, full-bodied Virginia throat hit (~10mg tar / 0.8mg–0.9mg nicotine content).
• PJ Super Mild / Smooth Gold → JPS Blue (Smooth Medium): Matches the ~8mg tar / 0.6mg–0.7mg nicotine smooth everyday draw (comparable to Manchester Sapphire Blue).
• PJ Extra Mild / Fine Silver → JPS Silver / White: Matches the ~4mg tar / 0.4mg nicotine ultra-light profile (comparable to Manchester Light).

2. Winfield Gold New Name & Winfield Classic vs Original Explained

When Australian tobacco laws banned descriptor words like “Mild”, “Light”, and “Smooth”, British American Tobacco (BATA) updated the Winfield naming system. If you are searching for the Winfield Gold new name or comparing Winfield Classic vs Original, here is how the lineup maps out:

• Winfield Red / Original Blue (Full Strength 12mg–10mg): In duty-free and imported lines, Winfield Original Blue and Winfield Red represent the robust, full-flavour Australian Virginia blend ($18.00 per 20s pack or $160.00 per 200-stick carton at Halo E-Vape).
• Winfield Gold New Name (Formerly Winfield Extra Mild 8mg): Rebranded first to Winfield Gold and across select retail lines as Winfield Original Gold / Classic Gold. It sits in the 8mg medium-smooth bracket.
• Winfield Sky Blue / Silver (Formerly Super Mild 4mg–6mg): The lightest option for smokers seeking mild cigarettes in Australia.
